A guide to student support at UNE

Whether it be technical issues, academic concerns, or finding everything just a little too overwhelming (it happens to the best of us), there are many services at UNE that students can turn to for support.

To save you from searching high and low for all that UNE has to offer, we’ve put together an A-Z of the support services available to you! Let’s get into it…

Academic Skills Office (ASO)

If it’s been a while since you last wrote an essay or have zero idea on where to begin with referencing, the ASO is your go-to in refreshing your academic skills. They offer workshops for all UNE students and include tips on academic writing, reading, referencing, basic maths and statistics help.

Email them at asohelp@une.edu.au.

Advocacy & Welfare

If you’re looking for someone who understands the pressures of student life, then look no further than Advocacy & Welfare. You can trust their team of independent and student advocates to guide you in the right direction when things don’t go to plan. Their list of services ranges from applying for special consideration to helping you lodge your tax return. They also offer free and independent advice on such things as academic & behavioural misconduct, appeals, and remission of fees.

Contact us at advocacy@une.edu.au or ring 02 6773 3116

Counselling and Psychological Services (CAPS)

Know that you never have to do it alone. All UNE students, both on-campus and online, can access free and confidential counselling through CAPS’s team of qualified psychologists.

They also offer ‘Study Gym’ sessions for anyone seeking tips on procrastination, managing workload, and increasing concentration – sign us up!

Dixson Library

If a library isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when you think about support at UNE, then you haven’t experienced our amazing librarians! Their team can assist you in finding academic journals and sources for tackling those research assignments.

Pop in and see the front desk or reach out to them on (02) 6773 2458.

Employability & Careers

Whether you’re at the beginning of your studies or well into your student journey, thinking about your career post-study can be all-consuming! The Careers Team is here to help you progress from a university student into an employable graduate. You can reach out to them for tips on resume writing, clarifying your career aspirations, and even testing out their interview simulation tool.

First Year & Academic Advisors

Freshers – this one is for you. First Year Advisors are here to help anyone who’s new to the university. Think of them as that wise friend you can call upon when confused or unsure about your coursework. You can also enrol in the First Year Academic Skills Support page on Moodle. Ask your unit coordinator for the link!

IT Services

If turning it off and back on again simply won’t work, then maybe try reaching out to IT. They are wizards in helping you access your UNE accounts, setting up software on your computer, and answering all your study-related computer queries.

PASS@UNE

Peer-Assisted Study Sessions are designed to target traditionally difficult units. Essentially, you can join in on regular, peer-assisted study sessions to work together with a leader and other students to review course content and engage with your classmates outside of class. Look for the PASS logo on your unit’s Moodle Home page.

Regional Study Centres

In addition to UNE’s Tamworth, Taree and Sydney (Parramatta) locations, UNE has a network of Regional Study Centres across New England and Northwest NSW. Through the Regional Study Centre Network, students can access:

  • Student PCs and printing facilities
  • eduroam Wi-Fi and access to the AARNet network
  • BYO device workstations
  • Direct phone link to UNE academic and professional staff
  • Extend access to study space

Safety, Security & Information

Safety and Security provides round-the-clock security services on campus. They can assist you if you’re lost on campus, parking, student ID cards, and so much more. They can also help you get between town and campus with their free shuttle bus service which runs during trimesters 1 and 2. You can get in touch with them at any time if you have a security or safety concern, and even if you are studying late and would like someone to walk you to your car.
