Why you should volunteer with TuneFM
It’s World Volunteer Day!
Did you know that there are exclusive volunteer opportunities available to you as a UNE student? TuneFM, UNE’s very own student-powered radio station, offers a flexible range of volunteering opportunities for both on-campus and online students.
Keep reading to learn all about TuneFM’s programs and why volunteering during your studies is one of the smartest career moves you can make.
Why volunteer?
There are a plethora of benefits to be gained from volunteering; the most alluring being the chance to develop your professional skillset. Volunteering with TuneFM can equip you with the following:
- Skills in professional broadcasting.
- Enhanced public speaking and presentation skills.
- An opportunity to apply academic knowledge in a media context.
- A developed professional portfolio for future career opportunities.
- Valuable industry connections.
- Real-world experience in content creation and delivery.
“Volunteering with TuneFM can be a really tailored experience. The main things we’ve seen are a boost in confidence and improved communication skills, which are vital for pretty much any career. But also, it’s really fun, and I think that’s one of the biggest benefits. “– Ash, TuneFM Programs Coordinator
In an increasingly competitive job market, standing apart from the sea of candidates is difficult. Having volunteer experience on your resume is a great way to separate you from you’re fellow graduates and stand out to hiring managers.
Depending on your career aspirations, the skills you develop during your time as a volunteer can be directly relevant to roles in your desired industry. Here are some fields where the experiences provided by TuneFM will benefit you:
- Media and Communications
- Journalism
- Sciences
- Public Relations
- Arts and Humanities
- Business
- Any discipline where clear communication is valued
Volunteers can also net points towards the New England Award (NEA), which will appear on their academic transcript after graduation.
What does volunteering look like?
Interested? Here’s what you can expect when volunteering with TuneFM.
Volunteers are only required to put in 2-3 hours of work per week. This includes preparation time for projects that require script writing and research. Volunteering opportunities with TuneFM aren’t designed to take time away from your studies. This is reflected in your workload.
Your hours are flexible. Being a student-powered organisation, the team understands that juggling study and life can quickly become unpredictable. Build volunteering around your schedule and work when it suits you best. The team is more than happy to work with you to find the best approach for your individual circumstances.
Better yet, no prior experience is required; the team will teach you everything on the job! Here are some things you can expect to learn:
- Radio Broadcasting Fundamentals
- Voice and Presentation Techniques
- Basic Technical Equipment Operation
- Media Law and Broadcasting Standards
- Content Development
- Show Planning
Complete UNE units through TuneFM
Did you know your volunteer experiences can also count towards credit points in your degree?
TuneFM can facilitate the completion of WORK300 and HASS102. If you’re eligible to complete these units for your degree, the team can provide hands-on experiences that can also count towards the completion of your degree.
Studying WORK300 and HASS102 are great ways to build practical skills while cementing your academic knowledge. Get the same benefits from a traditional volunteer experience with TuneFM, just with some added credit points as well.
These units are accommodated across all trimesters and are open to both online and on-campus students. You can find more information about completing WORK300 and HASS203 at TuneFM here.
From our Volunteers
We asked our volunteers whether they’d recommend the experience to other students. Here’s what they had to say:
“It will enrich you and provide an opportunity to develop skills in media and communications. People should grab the chance.” – Sayed
“Go for it. You will learn a lot and meet great people.” – Goodness
