
5 Things you didn’t know you could get help with at UNE
University can be an overwhelming experience at times. There are many services available to you to support various aspects of you student journey. From academic skills to discounts and assessment appeals, here are 5 things you didn’t know you could get help with at UNE.
1. Academic Skills
Starting university, you may feel like you’re on your own academically. Referencing, note-taking, writing and academic reading, it’s all on you to develop these skills yourself, right? The Academic Skills Office (ASO) exists to help you build your range of academic skills. ASO has referencing guides covering each discipline’s preferred styles, tips and modules to help you develop study-specific skills and much more. Leverage these free resources and upskill yourself for your university journey today!
2. Tax help
Tax time is very confusing and overwhelming if you’ve got no prior experience lodging tax returns. Advocacy and Welfare is a registered Tax Help Centre. The ATO’s community-based Tax Help program is a free and confidential service open to people earning about $70,000 or less each year. From mid-July to October, ATO-trained volunteers can help you lodge your return, claim a refund of franking credits, submit a non-lodgement advice or lodge an amendment.
If you earned $70,000 or below in the financial year, you may be eligible for the Tax Help program. Please call Advocacy and Welfare on (02) 6773 2349 to book an appointment or book online here. Bookings for these appointments are available near the end of July, so take note! To prepare for your appointment and check your eligibility, visit our Tax Help webpage. Make use of this free service and ensure your financial situation is the best it can be.
3. Special Consideration
Have you had an unforeseen or unavoidable circumstance negatively impact your performance in an assessment? With special consideration, you can apply for an additional 3% of marks to be added to your final grade. You have within 5 days of your last piece of assessment for the trimester to submit your application.
You will need to draft a personal statement and gather supporting documentation as a part of the application process. 4. Assessment Appeals
Receiving an unfair grade on an assessment may seem like an unfixable problem. Did you know you have the right to appeal assessment results? If you believe you have been marked unfairly, you have 10 working days from receiving your result to lodge an appeal. Successful appeals will result in an independent re-mark of the assessment.

5. Student Discounts
Student life is expensive. But there are ways to make it cheaper! As a UNE student, you have access to a wide range of student discounts.
