How to Find a Job While Studying

Trying to balance job hunting and university study can be challenging. If you’re feeling the financial pinch, it might be time to consider picking up some casual or part-time work. Not sure where to start? No worries! We’ve compiled a list of resources to help you with your search.

Here’s where to start.

1. Casual jobs at UNE

There are many opportunities for casual or part-time work available in Armidale at UNE. From catering to retail, UNE Life has various job listings that are updated here. UNE also lists job opportunities across a range of areas on its current vacancies website. If you’re looking for a job on-campus, these are the best search channels for you.

2. Get support from the UNE Careers Team

The UNE careers team is here to support you in your professional journey. The UNE Career Toolkit comprises a multitude of resources aimed at enhancing your professional skills. Boasting specific industry insights, e-learning modules focusing on resume writing and interview techniques, the toolkit can help prepare you for your entry into the workforce.

For more information on how the careers team can aid you in your search, listen to TuneFM’s interview with team member Kate Pardy.

“The UNE Careers Team is here to support you at every stage of your career journey. Come along to our workshops (online or in-person), update your resume with help from our team and the UNE Career Toolkit, or book a career chat to explore job ideas during and after uni to help you plan or move towards your goals.”- Anna Dellow, UNE Careers

3. Use online job boards

Looking for work outside of the university? Set up a LinkedIn and SEEK account. These online job boards can recommend personalised work opportunities based on your preferences and current skill level. Enter your criteria and set up notifications for new opportunities relating to you. If you prefer a more proactive approach, simply just browse what’s already been posted.

Moreover, once you graduate from UNE, these tools will be key in landing you a role in your favoured industry. Having a pre-established presence on platforms like LinkedIn can help you stand out to recruiters, making your search easier down the track. Common advice is to start the job search 6 months prior to your expected graduation date. So, set up your accounts today and get started!

4. Need more help?

If you have tried out all of these tips and are still struggling, reach out to Advocacy and Welfare. They can help provide support during this process and direct you to more resources as required.
